Guided
Walking Tour of Città Alta
(Old City of Bergamo) Bergamo is a town in Lombardy, Italy, about 40km northeast of Milan. The foothills of the Alps begin immediately north of the town. The town has two centers: “Città Alta” (uptown), a hilltop medieval town, surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 17th century, and “Città Bassa” (downtown), developed since the beginning of 20th century. Our tour will take us to the upper city, which is the historic center of Bergamo. On Sundays, the Città Alta is particularly popular with both locals and tourists who go to enjoy their “passeggiata,” or stroll. You may be entertained by numerous street shows and artists ranging from musicians to magicians. There are many buildings of artistic or historic relevance, including piazza Vecchia (old square), Palazzo della Ragione (old city hall), Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary) and Cappella Colleoni (Colleoni chapel). The Città Alta is also home to two museums, The Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Civic Museum) and the Museo di Scienze Naturali Caffi (Caffi Natural Science Museum). A bus will take you to Città Alta. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the cobblestone streets and for the short walk back to the hotel at the end of the evening. |
|
| 18:00 - 21:00 |
Wine Tasting at La Cantina This charming wine bar and trattoria offers attendees an opportunity to sample a variety of Italian wines and dinner hors d’oeuvres specifically chosen to complement them. Afterwards, you can explore the Città Bassa on your own. If time permits and you are so inclined, you might wish to return to Città Alta to visit the main street, Via Gombito, which is littered with places to eat and drink, the most popular destinations being the “gelaterie” (ice cream stores) for additional dessert, or the “pizzerie” if you are looking for more taste sensations. |

Spouse Activity “GaGa Over Gruyeres” Take a trip with us to Gruyeres, where the walls and turrets of a fairytale castle bristle atop a single crag rising above the gorgeous rolling lowlands of Canton Fribourg. Dominating the landscape is the great towering wedge of the Moleson, a jutting chunk of mountain rising to 2000m. Our scenic view from the castle includes the hillside medieval village, and just before the castle entrance is the unique Gyger Museum, created by the artist who designed the monsters and decor of the Alien movies. We’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch in one of the local restaurants nestled among small specialty shops offering unique decorative items and containing heavenly meringues and other delicacies. This is dairy country, the most famous product by far being Gruyere cheese, which has been produced in this farming region since the year 1115. At the foot of Gruyeres, we’ll find a working dairy where we can watch cheese being made, and possibly discover the secret of producing double cream, the heavenly, butterfat-rich taste sensation usually served with forest fruits. We know you’ll enjoy the scenic ride back to the hotel. |
