2007 IADD Annual Meeting
October 4-6, 2007
The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, Vancouver, BC, Canada

“A NEW POINT OF VIEW” ANNUAL MEETING PROGRAMS

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, and leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.
     - Edward Abbey

A well-ordered life is like climbing a tower; the view halfway up is better than the view from the base, and it steadily becomes finer as the horizon expands.

     - William Lyon Phelps

The view only changes for the lead dog.

     - Norman O. Brown

Viewing STATS - Your Hottest Ticket for Growth & Profits Today
Speaker: Jerry Kovach, J.F. Helmold & Bro.
STATS - or performance measures - stand out more than any other management practice as today’s #1 key to success for leading and not just surviving. Can you imagine performance results like +20% sales growth, +10% profits, +15% productivity gains, etc? Why is our emotional affair with STATS one of the most controversial, yet boring, management issues? Why should we use STATS like they do in sports? Learn FAQs about STATS and what STATS can really do for you. By attending this program, you’ll learn how to install an exciting, hi-return STATS Dashboard System for your company and your managers in less than a month, complete with:
  • A few good leaders
  • The right STATS and the right ingredients
  • Individual ownership for each of your managers
  • Simple data collection and reporting mechanisms that work
  • A CD template to get you started
Also learn how to use STATS to generate results, including graphical output updates, making ownership real with accountability communication, do’s and don’ts of output interpretation, and a real-life case study to get you going. This workshop will include reference literature, worksheets, and software. There will also be opportunities for interactive discussions with other attendees and the workshop presenter.

A New View of Foil Stamping - Taking it to the Next Level
Speaker: Ross Hutchison, UEI Group
UEI Group will discuss several new processes that provide finishers with new solutions and opportunities for foil stamping and embossing. Ideas presented can be integrated into your own presentations to encourage the use of foil stamping and embossing. You will also come away with innovative timesaving opportunities for you to implement into your own operation. You will learn about several new advances in foil stamping and embossing including unifraxion, overprinting and decorative glitter as well as Braille embossing.

An Insider’s View of the Interview Process
Speaker: Barbara Adams, HR architect
Do you hate to perform job interviews even when you are on the hiring side of the desk? Join us as an HR professional shows us the ins and outs of how to hold fair, legal job interviews. The job interview is a powerful factor in the employee selection process. Learn how to ask legal interview questions that illuminate the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses to determine job fit and avoid illegal interview questions and practices that could make your company the target of a lawsuit.

The Buyer’s View of Equipment & Consumables
Speakers:Jeff Zaiger, Dieco Inc.; Darryl Griffin and Tommy Moore, Stafford Cutting Dies
Do you ever wish you had a crystal ball in order to see the decision-making process from inside your customer’s head? This panel will help you understand the most important factors that purchasers consider when they buy equipment and consumables. You might not be surprised to learn that price, customer service and location come into play. But attend this session and learn some of the lesser-known factors that influence buying. It could mean the difference between making—or losing—the sale.

To View or Not to View: iBoss
Speaker: Jim Brant, Pace Punches
The internet can be a powerful tool, but how do you ensure its powers are being used for good and not for evil? Have you thought about how you are going to manage internet use in your workplace and at home? This session will focus on one revolutionary internet management device that is powerful and extremely easy to use. This simple security device makes home and business internet use safer and far more efficient, while changing the way predators and scammers can access the internet. Learn how the system works and some key features of the device such as website blocking through categories, scheduled internet access, monitoring and logging internet activity using automatic email reports, internet security, identifying computers on the network, and preventing viruses, spyware and malware. This device guards an entire network and makes tampering difficult, while requiring little computer experience to use.

View of the Future - New Ideas and Concepts
Moderators: Derrick Ames, Die Supply Guys; Clint Medlock, Stafford Cutting Dies
Do you have an idea for technology that you’d love to see available in the future? Back again by popular demand, this fast-paced brainstorming session will collect ideas from those attending, who will then vote to select the most viable possibilities. These potential innovations will then be printed in The Cutting Edge, making them available to the companies with the ability to produce them. We’ll also update you on the excellent suggestions made at last year’s meeting. So put on your thinking caps and prepare to shape the future.

Look, Up in the Sky! Viewing the TechTeam
Panel: Michael Barkin, Advanced Die Supplies; Rick Putch, Dicar; Rich Kengott, Ken Specialties; Craig Pepper, Pace Punches; Clint Medlock, Stafford Cutting Dies
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s IADD’s TechTeam! Wikipedia defines superheroes as characters “of unprecedented ... prowess [who are] dedicated to acts of derring-do in the public interest.” Learn more about this superhero team of seemingly mere mortals who posses extraordinary powers and abilities, relevant skills, and advanced equipment which they use in the fight against seemingly criminal converting processes. They’re willing to risk their own sanity in the service of good, without expectation of reward. They are motivated by their sense of responsibility and a strong belief in humanitarian service. Learn more about their activities and how they bring value to IADD membership and all who use their services—which could be you!

American DIEdol - A Reality View of Diemaker, Diecutter and Supplier Relationships
Panel: Rick “C. Crest” Clay, Reliable Steel Rule Die Co; Kevin “Simon” Carey, DieInfo; Joe “Jackson” Adkison, Adko; Cindy “Abdul” Crouse, IADD
Back by popular demand! Experience an exciting “reality” session on how people order their diemaking/diecutting/supplies. This spoof of the famous TV show will take you through a list of “do’s” and “don'ts” when customers order. Laughing out loud will be allowed, but you’ll still come away with valuable insight on the ordering process.

Get ready for loads of fun and a chance to unleash your creativity. First we’ll treat you to lunch at a fabulous restaurant on Granville Island, a breathtaking oasis and urban haven that will steal your heart and seduce your senses. Then you’ll work with Ange Adair of Beadworks/Beazu, to learn about beading techniques and jewelry design and to create a beautiful take-home piece of your own. Ange, who holds a BFA from Emily Carr Institute and has studied jewelry, its history and beading techniques and has led hundreds of classes and workshops, focuses on excellent craftsmanship and helping people express their own style through the endless possibilities of beading. After you leave Beazu, you are free to sample the fresh, tantalizing offerings of the market, browse the unique items crafted by some of the best local talent, and visit the galleries and studios of Granville Island.
